Crew change – observations from the frontline

Join Capt Ghulam Hussain, FNI, head of the Maritime Affairs Department at The BMA, as he presents a webinar on crew change with The Nautical Institute on Thursday 29 April at 10 am UK time. Ghulam, who represents the authority at the IMO and other intergovernmental and industry-based engagements, will be joined by Jan de Boer from the IMO Seafarers Crisis Action Team (SCAT).

Although the number of seafarers requiring repatriation has declined – from a high of around 400,000 to around 200,000 as of April 2021 (and with a similar number waiting to join ships) – this is still a significant figure.  Now, more than ever, seafarers need to be designated as key workers to ensure priority vaccination and access to safe transit and travel.

Despite the continued efforts of the IMO, Industry Stake Holders and Member States, there is still a long way to go before we are back to a normal crew change regime.

During the webinar, the two presenters will discuss their first-hand experience in dealing with crew repatriation matters, analyse progress, and examine the possible way forward and how we avoid a recurrence of the crisis.
