BMA Expands Innovative IGF Training Framework with Addition of CSMART Category BMA News Date Posted 15 June 2026 Share Facebook Twitter LinkedIn The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) has introduced an innovative and forward-looking solution that transforms how seafarers can achieve the IGF (Advanced) Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) under the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low Flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code). Traditionally, certification required 30 days of sea service and practical low-flashpoint fuel bunkering experience onboard. The BMA has now addressed this challenge by establishing a comprehensive training pathway that enables seafarers to meet these requirements through approved, high-quality shore-based training programmes incorporating live LNG bunkering experience. This pioneering approach makes the BMA the first flag State to permit such an alternative route, ensuring that seafarers can gain the required competencies in a controlled, safe, and highly effective training environment, without compromising regulatory standards. It reflects the Authority’s strong commitment to safety, innovation, and the practical implementation of alternative fuel technologies across the maritime sector. As part of this initiative, the BMA is also pleased to announce the approval of CSMART, Carnival Corporation’s training centre based in the Netherlands, as its latest authorised IGF Code training provider. The CSMART programme, developed under the guidance of the BMA, combines advanced, highly sophisticated simulation, with full-scale classroom bunkering rig and hands-on LNG bunkering operations, offering seafarers a unique opportunity to gain real-world operational experience. Upon successful completion of the programme, candidates become eligible for the Bahamas IGF (Advanced) Certificate of Proficiency with no further requirement to have 30 days sea service and on board low-flashpoint fuel bunkering. The addition of CSMART followed by the Maersk training centres (Denmark and India) and Simwave (Netherlands), further strengthens the BMA’s global network of approved training providers and reinforces its leadership role in supporting the shipping industry’s transition to low and zero-carbon fuels, while maintaining the highest standards of competence and safety.
