BMA Joins IMO Secretary-General’s World Maritime Day Reception in London

The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) joined members of the international maritime community in London for a reception hosted by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez to mark World Maritime Day 2026.

Representing The Bahamas was Captain Dwain Hutchinson, Managing Director & CEO of the BMA, accompanied by Captain Ghulam Hussain, Deputy Director, Maritime Affairs, and Christos Chrysovitsanos, Assistant Director, Maritime Affairs.

The reception brought together representatives of IMO Member States and maritime industry leaders to mark this year’s theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.” The theme, which spans 2026 and 2027, emphasises the importance of translating international maritime regulations into effective national legislation, enforcement and day-to-day practice, supported by technical cooperation, training and capacity development.

In his remarks, Secretary-General Dominguez reinforced the importance of ensuring that implementation delivers meaningful results for the people working at sea, while recognising the vital contribution of maritime transport to the global economy.

The occasion provided an opportunity for the BMA to engage with international maritime leaders and reflect on the shared responsibility of Member States, industry and maritime professionals in turning international commitments into practical outcomes.

As part of the global World Maritime Day initiative, the IMO Headquarters and the London Eye were illuminated in blue, highlighting the international maritime community’s commitment to the 2026–27 theme.
