Celebrating world maritime day 2022 Category BMA News Date Posted 29 September 2022 Share Facebook Twitter LinkedIn The IMO has always highlighted the issues that are really crucial to the future of maritime and this year’s World Maritime Day theme of ‘new technologies for greener shipping’ is no exception. This theme aligns closely with The BMA’s own principles – we are moving towards a reduction of paper through the use of technology and we are active ambassadors for Eyesea and NAMEPA – organisations working to protect the world’s oceans which is in line with UN sustainability Goal 13 – Climate action and Goal 14 – life below water. We all need to safeguard our fragile environment and the use of innovative technology will help us to achieve that. To coincide with World Maritime Day, The BMA has organised Bahamas Maritime Week which is also looking to the future sustainability of the industry, in this case focused on the human element of the sector. The BMA is raising awareness of shipping and its related industries not only to The Bahamas but also to the broader global economy. The week has been specifically geared towards communicating to young Bahamians that maritime offers the diversity to appeal to anyone contemplating their future work options. Bahamas Maritime Week has included media appearances, panel discussions, ship visits, an exhibition and engagements in local schools – we must never forget that young people represent the future of our industry. Bahamas Maritime Week was attended and supported at the highest level by the Prime Minister Rt Honorable Philip Davis, and Minister Honorable Jobeth Coleby-Davis, and we would all like to extend our appreciation for their support during the week and also of the broader maritime industry. Of equal importance was the support by local stakeholders and Bahamas Shipowners Association representatives, all of whom actively contributed to, and participated in, all the week’s activities. Shipping remains a vital and key industry to the global economy and we join the worldwide community in celebrating World Maritime Day.
